Unlike black, white and green pepper, which are the fruits of Piper nigrum, pink pepper is the fruit of an evergreen tree called Shinus, native to Latin America.
The fruit that comes from Shinus has the characteristic pink color and is very similar in form to a pepper berry, so it is commonly called pink pepper or false pepper. Pink pepper tastes completely different from common pepper; pungent and slightly bitter. Smell: aromatic, resinous.
Aromatic herbs are used to brew Belgian Bière Blanche, Grand Cru, Tripples and Christmas Beers. They are usually added in the last 15 minutes of boil. In ancient times herbs were used to extend beer's storage time.
